My Lords, I beg to introduce a Bill to make provision with respect to the administration of justice in the metropolitan area; to provide for a lieutenant and deputy lieutenants for Greater London; to make fresh provision with respect to the indemnification of justices and their clerks, recorders and clerks of the peace; to make minor amendments of the law relating to the administration of justice in England and Wales and an amendment of Section 8 of the Justices of the Peace Act, 1949, extending to Scotland; and for connected purposes. I beg to move that the Bill be read a first time.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 1a.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

EARL ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, may I ask the noble and learned Lord whether this Bill will deal with either the ending or the replacement of the Lord Lieutenants of the County of Middlesex?

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, I can answer the noble Earl only from memory. I think it does deal with that question.

On Question, Bill read 1a, and to be printed.
