HL Deb 21 March 1963 vol 247 c1221

3.5 p.m.

LORD DOUGLAS OF BARLOCH

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government which local authorities have submitted schemes for fluoridation of public water supplies to the Minister of Health under Section 28 of the National Health Service Act, 1946, or to the Secretary of State for Scotland under the corresponding enactment.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF HEALTH (LORD NEWTON)

My Lords, in England and Wales, the county councils of Flint, Kent, Lincoln (the Parts of Kesteven) and Monmouth and the county borough of Walsall. In Scotland the county councils of Fife and Inverness and the town council of the burgh of Dumfries. My right honourable friends have approved the Kent and Dumfries proposals, and expect to approve the others shortly.

LORD DOUGLAS OF BARLOCH

May I ask the noble Lord why Anglesey and Watford are not included in that list?

LORD NEWTON

I cannot answer for the reasons why any one particular local authority has or has not submitted a scheme to my right honourable friend.

LORD DOUGLAS OF BARLOCH

But is the noble Lord not aware that both of those places are now operating this proposal?

LORD NEWTON

That is another matter, I think.
