HL Deb 18 July 1963 vol 252 c297

3.5 p.m.

LORD KENNET

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether it is true that the NATO countries have agreed to a trial relexation of the system whereby East German scientists and sportsmen are refused entry to their soil, and whether the Government will make a statement.]

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (THE EARL OF DUNDEE)

My Lords, Her Majesty's Government and other Governments concerned have decided that favourable consideration should be given to applications for travel facilities from East German scientists and sportsmen who wish to take part in international scientific and sports meetings as members of an all-German delegation or team. Our policy on the issue of temporary travel documents to East Germans is kept constantly under review.

LORD KENNET

My Lords, are the Government aware that the announcement they have just made will be widely welcomed among civilised men of all political convictions throughout the world?
