§ 2.40 p.m.
§ LORD BARNBYMy Lords, I beg leave to ask the second Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.
§ [The Question was as follows:
§ To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they will state the reported movements of (a) immigrants from all quarters into the United Kingdom, and (b) migrants from the United Kingdom to Commonwealth countries for the first six months of 1962 and for the whole years 1961 and 1960.]
THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS (THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE)My Lords, immigration figures for Commonwealth citizens are available only in respect of the West Indies and certain Commonwealth countries in Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean. The net inward movement from these countries was estimated to be 57,700 in 1960, and 136,400 in 1961. The corresponding figure for the first five months of 1962 was 67,500. The figure for June is not yet available. The number of aliens accepted for permanent residence is of the order of 16,000 annually. As regards the second part of my noble friend's Question, some 124,000 people emigrated from this country in 1960. Of these, 101,000, or approximately 82 per cent., went to other Commonwealth countries. I cannot give figures for the later dates requested by the noble Lord since the statistics are still in the course of preparation. But there is no reason to believe that they will show any substantial variation from those I have given for 1960.
