HL Deb 03 December 1962 vol 245 c1

2.35 p.m.

LORD AIREDALE

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether, in view of the prevalence of robbery with violence, they will urge a wider adoption of the banking habit by wage-earners than has so far resulted from the passing of the Payment of Wages Act, 1960.]

THE FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (LORD CARRINGTON)

My Lords, the provision of the Payment of Wages Act, 1960, enabling the wages of manual workers to be paid into their bank accounts has been in force since December 1, 1960. The Minister of Labour has announced that he intends to appoint March 1, 1963, as the date on which payment of wages by cheque will become lawful under this Act.

LORD AIREDALE

My Lords, I am obliged to the noble Lord for that Answer.
