HL Deb 01 August 1962 vol 243 cc257-8

2.51 p.m.

THE EARL OF GOSFORD

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government why an R.A.F. team is not being sent to the World Aerobatics Contest at Budapest this year, and whether they will consider sending a team to similar contests in future.]

THE FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (LORD CARRINGTON)

My Lords, the Royal Air Force were not invited to take part in this contest, which was confined to light, pistonengined aircraft of the type normally used by civil flying clubs. These sporting events are not suitable for Royal Air Force participation.

THE EARL OF GOSFORD

My Lords, while thanking my noble friend for his reply, may I ask the First Lord whether the Air Ministry would reconsider this decision for the future? In the past, the Royal Air Force have taken part in such displays, to the great honour of themselves and to the great honour of their country.

LORD CARRINGTON

My Lords, I think that the difference is that this is a competition, whereas what the Royal Air Force usually take part in are displays. That is exactly the point.

THE EARL OF GOSFORD

May I just add that, while I will not dispute with my noble friend over this, the R.A.F. have, in fact, certainly in pre-war days, taken part in competitions.
