EARL ST. ALDWYNMy Lords on behalf of my noble friend, Lord Hailsham, I beg to move the Motion standing in his name on the Order Paper.
§ Moved, That leave be given to advance the Motion standing in the name of the Earl of Bessborough from Tuesday, the 28th instant to Wednesday, the 22nd instant.—(Earl St. Aldwyn.)
§ VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGHMy Lords, I shall certainly not object to this Motion, but may I take this opportunity of raising the question of Business to-day? This is an extraordinary situation into which, apparently, Members of the House have got themselves. I believe there are 30 speakers down for to-day on what are apparently both important issues. I do not see how we are going to get through and give everybody a chance to speak unless part of the Business is adjourned to another day.
§ THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL AND MINISTER FOR SCIENCE (VISCOUNT HAILSHAM)My Lords. I think the noble Viscount is certainly right in saying that it is an unexpected position. I certainly did not expect it when I came to my office today. We must just see how we get on. I realise that the noble Viscount has raised an important and valuable point, and I know that my noble friend will he available for consultation a little later.
§ VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGHWe shall see.
§ On Question, Motion agreed to.
