HL Deb 09 March 1961 vol 229 cc516-7
BARONESS WOOTTON OF ABINGER

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many of the persons sentenced to life imprisonment who have been released from prison in the past five years have subsequently been convicted of crimes of violence.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (EARL BATHURST)

My Lords, of the 76 persons released from sentences of life imprisonment during the last five years, 1956 to 1960, inclusive, two have subsequently been convicted of crimes of violence. In addition, eleven persons have been released during this period from detention during Her Majesty's pleasure (having been under the age of eighteen when the original offence was committed): and of these—that is of the eleven—two have subsequently been convicted of crimes of violence.

BARONESS WOOTTON OF ABINGER

My Lords, I thank the noble Earl for his Answer, and in view of the satisfactory nature of those figures I do not propose to try the patience of your Lordships further.
