HL Deb 27 June 1961 vol 232 c933

2.35 p.m.

LORD TEVIOT

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they are aware that, owing to the admitted increase in crimes of violence, people living alone in the areas where such crimes were committed, and those who have children returning from school, are suffering from continued anxiety and fear, and whether they have formed any plans to relieve this day and night apprehension.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (EARL BATHURST)

My Lords, I am most glad to be able to answer this Question of my noble friend, and I am sure your Lordships will join with me in saying how pleased we are that he has recovered from his illness and he is back in his place in your Lordships' House.

Her Majesty's Government are aware that the increase in crimes of violence gives rise to public concern. They are satisfied that the police exercise special vigilance where there is reason for particular apprehension in any area. The Commissioner of Police has informed my right honourable friend the Home Secretary that all Metropolitan police officers are on the alert to protect children as a normal part of their duty and that they give special attention to the places where children congregate; and I am advised that the police elsewhere adopt similar measures.
