HL Deb 01 June 1961 vol 231 cc873-4
THE EARL OF LUCAN

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans they have for tree planting in Hyde Park to make good the losses due to road improvements and parking schemes.]

EARL ST. ALDWYN

My Lords, the losses of trees due to road improvement and parking schemes must be considered with the losses due to natural causes. Two hundred and twenty-one trees have been planted in Hyde Park in the last three years and 90 plantings are proposed this year. These more than compensate for losses from all causes, and replanting will continue on this basis. The Advisory Committee on Forestry, which advises my right honourable friend the Minister of Works on the long-term programme of felling and replanting in all the Royal Parks, will shortly consider Hyde Park.

THE EARL OF LUCAN

My Lords, I thank the noble Earl for his reply, which I think will give general satisfaction. I should like to ask him whether Her Majesty's Government, in their planting, are planting forest trees and not flowering shrubs.

EARL ST. ALDWYN

My Lords, all the plantings in the figures to which I have referred are of forest trees.
