HL Deb 24 July 1961 vol 233 cc823-4
LORD CONESFORD

My Lords, on behalf of my noble friend Lord Barnby, who is unable to be here, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in his name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government if, in connection with plans for renewed legislation to replace the Commonwealth Settlement Act, they will include powers to permit assistance to the provision in the Dominions of housing accommodation for migrants from the United Kingdom.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS (THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE)

My Lords, as I pointed out in my reply to my noble friend on June 6, the renewal of the Commonwealth and Empire Settlement Act is now under review. I am sure that my noble friend will not expect me to anticipate the results of that review, which will, of course, include an examination of housing for migrants.
