HL Deb 24 February 1960 vol 221 c285
THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES (LORD MERTHYR)

My Lords, I beg to move that this Bill be now read a second time.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a.—(Lord Merthyr.)

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

May I ask whether we can see this Bill?

THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES

My Lords, the Bill is obtainable in the Printed Paper Office, so far as I know, but if the noble Viscount wishes to ask me about it, I have a copy here.

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, I was only wondering whether "Fullbridge" meant that the bridge at the bottom of Market Hill is going to be repaired.

THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES

My Lords, the sole purpose of this very short Bill is to authorise the reduction of the height of the bridge above the river by 13 inches. Legislation is required to do that. I think that that is the substantial purpose of the Bill.

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, we will have another look at the Bill when we come to Third Reading. This bridge has not been in use for many years. There has been a temporary bridge, across which I have been driving for ten years.

THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES

My Lords, this is a short Bill of five clauses and it simply reduces the headway of the bridge over the river by a very small amount, but that cannot be done without an Act of Parliament.

On Question, Bill read 2a, and committed to an Unopposed Bill Committee.
