HL Deb 11 February 1959 vol 214 c70
LORD HAWKE

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what will be their attitude towards the importation of gold ducats minted in Germany bearing the Queen's head.]

THE MINISTER WITHOUT PORTFOLIO (THE EARL OF DUNDEE)

My Lords, all imports of precious jewellery and goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares from the Federal Republic of Germany are subject to quota restrictions. Commemorative medals of the kind referred to could be imported within the limits of this quota.

LORD HAWKE

My Lords, while thanking my noble friend for his Answer, may I ask whether there will be any restriction on those medals coming in in the baggage or pockets of travellers?

THE EARL OF DUNDEE

My Lords, the Customs have always operated a concession under which a reasonable amount of personal possessions may be brought in with one's baggage without payment of duty, and some of these medals could be passed through the Customs under that concession without duty being charged.

LORD DERWENT

My Lords, can my noble friend say what is the gold content of these medals?

THE EARL OF DUNDEE

Not exactly, but I believe that the medal is worth several ducats.
