HL Deb 03 December 1959 vol 219 cc1158-9
EARL. ST. ALDWYN

My Lords, I should like to inform your Lordships that there will be a formal Sitting of the House to-morrow morning at 11.30 for the purpose of receiving Bills from another place.

I would also say that, in view of the large number of noble Lords who wish to speak on the Motion this afternoon, it has been arranged that dinner will be available in the restaurant, but it would help the arrangements if noble Lords who wish to dine would inform the restaurant as soon as possible.

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, on the Business in general, I do not know whether the noble Lord has spotted that we are to have the First Readings of about four Bills to-morrow and that all the Second Readings are to be taken on Tuesday. That is very short notice for anybody who might be interested and who might wish to raise questions of criticism or opposition. I hope that this is not going to be the general practice.

EARL ST. ALDWYN

My Lords, it is not intended to be the general practice. I did, in fact, consult through the usual channels, and I understood that it would not be inconvenient to take these Bills on Tuesday, although I appreciate that it is short notice.

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, I might point out that the "usual channels" sometimes take that view, and then the members of the Party think that they have been rather "hard done by."
