HL Deb 28 July 1958 vol 211 cc239-40
THE SECRETARY of STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS (THE EARL OF HOME)

My Lords, perhaps I might consult with the noble Viscount the Leader of the Opposition and with the House. We have a considerable number of speeches in the debate on the international situation, and, as the House knows, we have agreed to adjourn at about 5.15 p.m., because there is to be a great meeting in connection with the Commonwealth Games—I think about 1,000 people in all—in the Royal Gallery. We had proposed to sit through lunch, but it is possible that we might be able to adjourn for a short time after the speech of the noble Lord, Lord Strang, depending on how the debate goes. I do not know whether we could consult through the usual channels as to that course: it might be more convenient.

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, I am sure that we all want to meet each other's convenience. If the speeches have not been too long up to that time, perhaps a word behind the Chair would make it possible to adjourn for a short time.

THE EARL OF HOME

My Lords, if that would suit the convenience of the House, it might be better.
