HL Deb 25 June 1957 vol 204 cc288-9

2.36 p.m.

EARL HOWE

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether, in view of the decision to construct a traffic tunnel at Newcastle and another at Glasgow, they will ensure that the lighting of these tunnels will be on the most modern lines, and that the regulations governing their use will ensure that vehicles using these tunnels will require the use of side and tail lights, as in the case of similar tunnels abroad.]

THE MINISTER WITHOUT PORTFOLIO (LORD MANCROFT)

My Lords, my noble friend Lord Howe may be assured that in lighting these proposed tunnels at Newcastle and Glasgow advantage will be taken of the latest developments both at home and abroad. I am afraid that it is too early to say what form the by-laws governing the use of vehicle lights in the tunnels will take.

EARL HOWE

My Lords, while thanking the noble Lord for that Answer, may I take it that we can be sure that the Mersey Tunnel will not be taken as a model, but some better lit tunnel, like that at Lyons?

LORD MANCROFT

My Lords, I know the views of the noble Earl on the Mersey Tunnel and all that happens in it. I can only repeat to him that all the best advice will be sought.
