HL Deb 18 July 1957 vol 204 cc1331-2

2.5 p.m.

VISCOUNT ELIBANK

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they have any statement to make as a corollary to their announcement on July 18, 1956, that distinctive stamps were to be issued in certain denominations for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.]

LORD CHESHAM

My Lords, a good deal of progress has been made with these stamps but there is still a lot of work to be done on them and my right honourable friend the Postmaster General cannot yet say exactly when they are likely to be issued.

VISCOUNT ELIBANK

My Lords, I beg to thank the noble Lord for his Answer. May I ask him if he would be so kind as to ask his right honourable friend the Postmaster General whether he would review the suggestion of an issue of small low-value pictorial stamps, which I have advocated in your Lordships' House and which, in the opinion of many well qualified to judge, would add to the revenue and in the opinion of the tourist industry, would increase the number of tourists to this country?

LORD CHESHAM

My Lords, I do not think that the noble Viscount's Question can be strictly construed as a corollary to the announcement of last July. At the same time, as I have said before, my right honourable friend's mind is a receptive and questing one and I shall certainly be pleased to ask him what the noble Viscount requested.

VISCOUNT ELIBANK

My Lords, I beg to thank the noble Lord.
