§ 2.49 p.m.
§ LORD VANSITTARTMy Lords, I beg leave to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.
§ [The Question was as follows:
§ To ask Her Majesty's Government what steps have been taken by the United Nations to ensure that the murderers of Lieutenant Moorhouse are brought to justice.]
THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (THE EARL OF GOSFORD)My Lords, an approach was made by Her Majesty's Government to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 3 about the question of bringing to justice those responsible for the murder of Lieutenant Moorhouse. The Secretary-General instructed General Burns to carry out an investigation and to submit a report. When received, the first report dealt only with the circumstances attending the transfer of Lieutenant Moorhouse's body. The Secretary-General has therefore asked General Burns to provide a fuller report, on receipt of which Her Majesty's Government hope that he will take up this question at once with the Egyptian Government. I know that I speak for the whole of your Lordships' House in expressing sincere sympathy with the family of this young officer.
§ LORD VANS1TTARTMy Lords, I am grateful for the reply and venture to hope that the matter will be most vigorously pressed in the future.
