HL Deb 07 February 1957 vol 201 c599

3.6 p.m.

LORD BARNBY

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government if, with regard to wheat imports into the United Kingdom, they will indicate the latest available figures showing—

  1. (a) Proportion of Canadian origin against all others;
  2. (b) Average price paid for:
    1. (i) Canadian;
    2. (ii) all other origins.]

LORD CHESHAM

My Lords, in the month of December, 1956, wheat of Canadian origin formed 46.6 per cent. of all wheat imported into the United Kingdom. The average price was £31 Is. per ton c.i.f., compared with £28 11s. for wheat from other sources overseas.

LORD BARNBY

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord. Can be give an indication if that figure for December approximates with the figures for the total year.

LORD CHESHAM

My Lords, I will give the noble Lord the figures for the total year, and he can make his own deduction. For the calendar year, 1956, the percentage of wheat of Canadian origin was 55 per cent., at an average price of £29 8s., as against £27 2s. for wheat from other sources.
