HL Deb 27 March 1956 vol 196 cc789-90
LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether any information is available on the extent to which Communism is responsible for the murder of British subjects in Cyprus, and whether anti-British incitement is being fomented by Soviet organisations in Beirut or Prague.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (LORD LLOYD)

My Lords, there is no direct evidence of Communist complicity in murders either of Cypriots or of other British subjects in Cyprus; neither is there any evidence to confirm Press reports that anti-British incitement is being fomented by Soviet organisations in Beirut or Prague.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I thank the noble Lord for his reply. I hope that Her Majesty's Government will continue to keep their eye on this matter.

LORD LLOYD

My Lords, I can certainly give the noble Lord that assurance.
