HL Deb 27 March 1956 vol 196 c791

[The references are to Bill (33) as first printed for the House of Commons.]

In the Title, line 11, at end insert ("to make further provision about shorthand notes taken on trials on indictment,")

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, this Amendment to the Title is consequential on Commons Amendment No. 5, which is designed to enable the Home Secretary to meet the wishes of Members of Parliament on occasion by making copies of the transcript of a trial available in the Libraries of the Houses of Parliament. There are stringent and particular provisions with regard to the making of transcripts available, and I myself, when I was Home Secretary, felt the difficulty in doing this. We desire to make this matter clear and to make it possible for the Home Secretary to do it without any difficulty. That is the purpose of the Amendment. As I say, its consequence is that the Title must be widened to the extent shown. I beg to move that this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
