HL Deb 06 March 1956 vol 196 cc80-1
VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLSBOROUGH

My Lords, I beg to ask the noble Marquess the Leader of the House a Question on Business of which I have given him Private Notice. The Question is as follows:

"To ask Her Majesty's Government if, in view of the statements on Jordan and Cyprus made in another place yesterday, they will give time for an early debate on Cyprus and the Middle East in this House.

THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY)

My Lords, I should like to assure the noble Viscount, Lord Alexander of Hillsborough, that we shall be happy to do what he suggests. From inquiries which we have made, I understand that your Lordships generally are anxious for as early a debate as possible, taking the two subjects in combination. I suggest, therefore, that we should make Thursday, March 15, available by postponing the Business now on the Order Paper for that day and meeting at 2.30 instead of the usual time of 3 o'clock, so as to give fuller time for the debate.

VISCOUNT ALEXANDER OF HILLS-BOROUGH

My Lords, I am much obliged to the noble Marquess for his Answer. Perhaps I may give notice to noble Lords present that we shall put down a Motion for that day in the name of my noble friend Lord Attlee.
