HL Deb 19 June 1956 vol 197 cc1045-6

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

LORD AMULREE

My Lords, in rising to move the Second Reading of this Bill, I should like to state that in the year 1758 almshouses in the City of Ludlow were rebuilt and the same charity covered the stipends of two clergymen. The money for the almshouses has not been really sufficient and there is not now enough money to pay the stipends of two clergymen. The Bill now before your Lordships is for the purpose of modernising the almshouses, with a reduction, which is being made with the greatest reluctance, of the number of residents from thirty-two to twenty-four and at the same time of separating the money for the payment of the stipends for one clergyman instead of two. There will be two bodies of trustees. This Bill has been widely publicised in the town of Ludlow and has met with no opposition. I beg to move that the Bill be now read a second time.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a—(Lord Amulree.)

On Question, Bill read 2a, and committed to a Committee of the Whole House.
