HL Deb 12 July 1956 vol 198 cc999-1000
LORD AMHERST OF HACKNEY

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government when the Report of the Reorganisation Commission for Pigs and Bacon is likely to be published.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, FISHERIES AND FOOD (EARL ST. ALDWYN)

My Lords, The Report of the Reorganisation Commission for Pigs and Bacon is being published to-day as a Command Paper. My right honourable friends the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Secretary of State for Scotland would like me to say how grateful they are to the Chairman, Dr. Bosanquet, and the other members of the Commission for the time and thought that they have devoted to these difficult problems. The recommend dations of the Commission will be considered together with those made by the Howitt Committee on the development of pig production. They will need to be discussed with the interests concerned before any announcement can be made about the Government's future policy on pig production and marketing.

LORD AMHERST OF HACKNEY

While thanking the noble Lord for his reply, may I ask him whether he can confirm that this Report deals with all types of pigs, including both pork and bacon pigs?

EARL ST. ALDWYN

Yes, my Lords, it certainly deals with all pigs, and not, as has been suggested, with bacon pigs only.
