My Lords, I beg to ask Her Majesty's Government the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what amount of work, expressed in terms of money, is at present being carried out on major improvements on the Great North Road (A.1), split up into the following sections:

  1. (1) London to Stamford.
  2. (2) Stamford to Doncaster.
  3. (3) Doncaster to Newcastle.
  4. (4) Newcastle to Edinburgh.]

My Lords, the estimated cost of major improvements at present in progress on the Great North Road (A.1) is: London to Stamford, £566,000; Stamford to Doncaster,£734,000; Doncaster to Newcastle, £966,000, and Newcastle to Edinburgh, £360,000. This represents six schemes between London and Stamford, four between Stamford and Doncaster, eight between Doncaster and Newcastle and five between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
