HL Deb 01 November 1955 vol 194 cc109-10

2.37 p.m.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether a Pole, Josef Malicki, was recently deported from this country; whether he was a member of the Polish Social and Cultural Association in Britain; whether his deportation was in any way due to interference with refugees in this country; and if so, whether power will be taken to close institutions which so abuse their position.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (LORD MANCROFT)

My Lords, Josef Malicki, who is understood to have been employed as Secretary of the Polish Social and Cultural Association in Britain, was deported on October 8. My right honourable friend, the Home Secretary, made the deportation order because he was satisfied, on considering all the circumstances, that this step was conducive to the public good. With regard to the last part of the Question, as has been made clear in the past, Her Majesty's Government will not tolerate any attempts at intimidation of, or interference with, refugees who enjoy the protection of this country, and will have no hesitation in taking appropriate action against those concerne.1 in such attempts.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, thank the noble Lord for his Answer, which is entirely satisfactory, and I hope that it will have an effect in checking what is a growing abuse, as I think he knows as well as I do.
