HL Deb 23 February 1955 vol 191 cc363-4
VISCOUNT STONEHAVEN

My Lords, I beg to ask the first Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they will ask the Government of the Union of South Africa if they would be prepared to place at their disposal their long experience of operating their law or ordinance which makes a roadworthy certificate a statutory requirement on the change of ownership of motor vehicles.]

THE PAYMASTER GENERAL (THE EARL OF SELKIRK)

My Lords, I am grateful to the noble Lord for the suggestion underlying his Question. Her Majesty's Government have no information in regard to the statutory requirement on the change of ownership of cars in the Union of South Africa, but steps are being taken by my right honourable friend the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to ask the Government of the Union to give us this information.

VISCOUNT STONEHAVEN

My Lords, may I thank the noble Earl for his Answer and say what great pleasure it gives me that for once we do not have to ask for information from across the Atlantic.
