§ 2.35 p.m.
§ [The Question was as follows:
§ To ask Her Majesty's Government whether, in the event of a new Tube being constructed from Victoria to North London, assurances can be given that the Tube would be constructed at such a depth that it would not prevent road tunnels being made at important road intersections where necessary.]
LORD HAWKEMy Lords, enabling powers for the construction of an underground railway from Victoria to Walthamstow are included in the British Transport Commission's Bill now before Parliament. The railway tunnel will generally be deep enough for any road tunnels which it may be proposed to construct above it, except at Oxford Circus where a new sub-surface station is to be built. The London County Council, as the highway improvement authority, have not, so far as I am aware, objected to this part of the plan.
