THE MARQUESS OF WILLINGDON

My Lords, I beg to ask Her Majesty's Government the Question of which I have given private Notice, with reference to the break in the cable to the Continent.

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL (EARL DE LA WARR)

My Lords, I can inform your Lordships that repairs are well in hand, and I hope will be completed shortly. The break was due really to the operation of trawlers which dragged up both cables. I understand that the fishermen concerned are at the moment looking not so much for herring as for fish that feed on herring, and which apparently live deeper. They have done so to the cost of the telephone service. That is the position.
