HL Deb 27 May 1954 vol 187 c1008

Second Schedule, page 15, line 14, first column, after ("Magpie") insert ("Moorhen").

Third Schedule, page 15, line 22, leave out ("Moorhen").

The Commons disagreed to these Amendments for the following Reason:

Because they are not satisfied that the moorhen is sufficiently harmful to be proscribed throughout the year.

EARL JOWITT

My Lords, I beg to move that this House do not insist on these Amendments. I do so with some regret, because I think our Amendments were very good; but we all want to get this Bill passed and I think the sensible course to take is not to insist on our Amendments, bearing in mind that the Home Secretary has power to move birds from one Schedule to another.

Moved, That this House do not insist on the Amendments to which the Commons have disagreed.—(Earl Jowitt.)

VISCOUNT ELIBANK

My Lords, I should like to support the noble and learned Earl. I regret this, too; but in view of the fact that we want this Bill and have a chance of getting it, I am prepared to withdraw any opposition I had in this regard and to support the Motion.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
