HL Deb 27 May 1954 vol 187 c1023
THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, I beg to move that the House do now adjourn.

Moved, That the House do now adjourn.—(The Marquess of Salisbury.)

LORD TWEEDSMUIR

My Lords, I should like to detain your Lordships but a few moments in order to tender my most humble apologies to the House for my absence from my place when the Protection of Birds Bill was considered. I had perceived that there were nine items preceding the Bill upon the Order Paper and I thought I had more time. But that is no excuse, nor do I seek to offer it as one. I apologise most humbly to those noble Lords who, having a special interest in this Bill, were in their places this afternoon. I thank the noble and learned Earl, Lord Jowitt for jumping into the breach most nimbly and doing my job for me. Besides tendering this apology, which I trust will be received in the spirit in which it is offered, I should like to tender, also, my very warm thanks to all those of your Lordships who helped me during the five days of Parliamentary time when I sought to steer a difficult course between "Priscilla and Charybdis," and, on this sixth day, for their co-operation in my absence.

On Question, Motion agreed to.
