HL Deb 15 June 1954 vol 187 cc1130-1

2.58 p.m.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, I have a further statement to make on the Business of the House, and I should perhaps make it before the noble and learned Lord the Lord Chancellor starts on the Business of the day. I have two announcements to make. First, I have to say that, owing to the sudden death of his father-in-law, Lord Camrose, of which I am sure all your Lordships will have heard with deep regret, Lord Birkenhead has asked the noble Viscount, Lord Hall, whether, without undue inconvenience to his friends and to the House generally, he could postpone his Motion on the Royal Navy which was down for discussion to-morrow and which Lord Birkenhead was to answer. I understand that the noble Viscount, with, if I may say so, characteristic generosity, has expressed his willingness to postpone the debate. If your Lordships agree, therefore, we shall have no more than a formal sitting to-morrow. My second announcement is that my noble friend Lord Carrington proposes, with the leave of the House, to interrupt Business at some convenient time, round about four o'clock, in order to repeat here a statement which my right honourable friend the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries is to make in another place this afternoon upon Crichel Down.
