Order of the Day for the consideration of the Second Report from the Select Committee read.

The Committee reported as follows:

1.—ACCOMMODATION The Committee set up a Sub-Committee to consider the accommodation in the House of Lords. The Committee to consist of the following: Earl Fortescue, Lord Teynham, Lord Bingham (Earl of Lucan), Lord Rea and Lord Burden with the Clerk of the Parliaments. The Lord Teynham to be Chairman.

2.—TELLEPHONES The Lord Great Chamberlain undertook to examine the possibility of installing a telephone kiosk in the lobby outside the Library.

3.—REVISED SCALES OF PAY The Committee sanctioned the application of Treasury Establishments Circulars No. 1/54 (Higher Clerical Officers) and No. 5/54 (Principals and Assistant Principals) to analogous grades of the staff of the House of Lords and authorised the consequential increase in the Estimates for the House of Lords for 1954–55.

4.—RESIGNATION OF A CLERICAL ASSISTANT The Committee were informed of the resignation of Mr. F. R. Lister, Clerical Assistant in the Department of the Lord Great Chamberlain, and of the appointment of Miss Jennifer Everard in his place. They approved the scale of salary for the post.

5.—HOUSEMAIDS The Committee authorised the appointment of two extra housemaids for the cleaning of additional rooms.

6.—RETIREMENT OF A HOUSEMAID The Committee sanctioned the payment of a gratuity, under section 40 of the Superannuation Act, 1949, to Mrs. Emily Perry who retired on 9th January, 1954, after 27 completed years' service.

7.—VENTILATION IN THE DINING ROOM The Lord Great Chamberlain undertook to examine the possibility of installing a Vent-Axia Ventilator in a window of the Peers' Dining Room to see whether the adoption of this ventilating system throughout the Refreshment Rooms would be desirable.
