My Lords, I beg to ask the second Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether Mr. Huan Hsiang has now been informed that the Government take an extremely grave view of the brutal injustice meted out to Mr. Ford.]

My Lords, this matter continues to be actively pursued in Pekin. I see no advantage in attempting to handle it simultaneously in London.

My Lords, the noble Marquess is far too modest. How can he expect the representations of a junior in Pekin to have the same effect as representations by himself or by the Secretary of State at this end?
