HL Deb 11 November 1953 vol 184 cc210-1
THE EARL OF LISTOWEL

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they will consider further financial assistance for drainage and irrigation, land settlement, and rural housing in British Guiana.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (THE EARL OF MUNSTER)

My Lords, substantial financial assistance has already been made available to British Guiana. Grants and loans under the Colonial Development and Welfare Acts include 11,145,000 dollars for drainage and irrigation, 277,000 dollars for land settlement, and 249,000 dollars for housing. The International Bank Mission which visited the territory has recommended a development programme covering these and other items totalling 65,911,000 dollars for the next five years, and has made recommendations for meeting the expenditure involved. The recommendations of its report are now receiving the urgent consideration of the Governor. I am not in a position to make a statement regarding further financial assistance from Her Majesty's Government.
