HL Deb 31 March 1953 vol 181 c450

LORD METHUEN asked Her Majesty's Government if Fawsley Hall (Northants.) has been scheduled in respect of its important Tudor namely the Hall and Oriel: and if stops are being taken for its preservation And maintenance.

LORD MANCROFT: Fawsley Hall, or House, is not scheduled as an Ancient Monument. It will be included in the list of buildings of special architectural and historic interest in the Daventry Rural District when that is issued by the Minister of Housing and Local Government under Section 30 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1947. But although the building has interest, the Minister of Housing and Local Government is advised that the structure, including the Great Hall with its oriel window, was greatly altered and enlarged during the last century. The only undoubted original work of the Tudor period is the exterior of part of the south front, and the small wing on the west, which has a lesser oriel window. The Minister is informed that the Mansion is in use in connection with the estate, and the exterior is being kept wind and weatherproof. The Tudor West wing has been restored and converted into two dwellings.

House adjourned at twelve minutes before eight o'clock.
