HL Deb 04 March 1953 vol 180 c937

2.58 p.m.

LORD HAWKE

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they will endeavour to make available a substantial extra ration of sugar to housewives at the season most appropriate for them to make jam of the British soft and stone fruit crops.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (LORD CARRINGTON)

My Lords, I can give an assurance that there will be extra sugar for jam making and that an announcement about the dates at which it will be made available, and the quantities, will be made in good time for the soft fruit season.

LORD HAWKE

My Lords, I thank my noble friend for his answer, which will be received with great acclamation by every housewife in the country.
