HL Deb 27 January 1953 vol 180 cc3-4
EARL HOWE

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many crimes of violence are known to the police to have occurred during the period from October 22, 1952, to January 20, 1953, and whether the figures indicate an increase or a decrease over the equivalent period a year ago.]

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, I regret that figures are not available for the period referred to by the noble Earl. On the assumption that he has in mind such offences as murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, wounding, rape and robbery, I can say that the number of such crimes known to the police in England and Wales during the first nine months of 1952 was 5,782. The corresponding figures for 1950 and 1951 were 5,427 and 5.493 respectively.
