HL Deb 16 April 1953 vol 181 c888

6.6 p.m.

THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY)

My Lords, perhaps I may say one word about the business on Monday. As your Lordships are aware, we shall proceed on Monday afternoon to the discussion of the Committee stage of the I Iron and Steel Bill. I would propose that we should rise at seven o'clock on Monday. We have allotted another day to the Committee stage, and we might extend it if necessary over into Wednesday, but I hope that that will not be necessary unless noble Lords opposite are too mightily borne on by enthusiasm for their Amendments. In default of that unhappy event, I think we ought to be fairly certain of finishing on Tuesday. In any case, I hope we shall finish on Tuesday.

LORD SILKIN

My Lords, as one who is personally concerned in the business on Monday, I thank the noble Marquess. I feel it is only right to assume that we shall act with good sense. I think the noble Marquess will find that we are not going to talk for the sake of talking, and I hope the Government will be as reasonable.
