HL Deb 17 December 1952 vol 179 c1044

2.45 p.m.

THE EARL OF LISTOWEL

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they have asked for the views of the Commonwealth Governments concerned on the Tweedsmuir Committee's Report on the Imperial Institute, and, if not, how soon they intend to do so.]

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL (EARL DE LA WARR)

My Lords, a copy of the Report was communicated before publication to the Commonwealth Governments, who were invited to make any preliminary comments that they might wish. Her Majesty's Government intend that fuller consultation shall take place as soon as it is possible to lay before the Governments concerned their views on the more important recommendations of the Report.

THE EARL OF LISTOWEL

I am much obliged to the noble Earl for his very satisfactory reply. The only thing I would ask him is whether, since this is an urgent matter, the Government will make up their minds as soon as possible, in order that the further consultations with the other Commonwealth authorities may not be unduly delayed.

EARL DE LA WARR

I can certainly give the noble Earl that assurance.
