Order of the Day read for the consideration of the First Report from the Select Committee.

The Committee reported as follows:

1.—HOUSE OF LORDS CHAMBER.

The Committee re-appointed the Sub-Committee on the Windows of the House consisting of the following Lords: D. Wellington, M. Salisbury, E. Drogheda, E. Munster, V. Mersey, L Wigan (E. Crawford), L. Morrison and the Lord Great Chamberlain, with the Clerk of the Parliaments.

2.—LIBRARY.

The Sub-Committee on the Library was reappointed as follows: L. Chancellor, E. Ilchester, E. Drogheda, E. Bessborough, V. Mersey, V. Simon. L. Stanmore, L. Burden, with the Clerk of the Parliaments.

Lord Reid was added to the Sub-Committee.

3.—REFRESHMENT DEPARTMENT.

The Sub-Committee on the Refreshment Department was re-appointed as follows: E. Fortescue, E. Bessborough, V. Mersey, L. Denman, L. Stanmore, L. Mancroft, L. Ammon, L. Henderson and the Lord Great Chamberlain, with the Clerk of the Parliaments.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth was added to the Sub-Committee.

4.—PAY ADDITIONS (ABATED SCALES).

The Committee sanctioned the application of Treasury Establishments Circular No. 47/52, dated 20th October, 1952, to analogous grades of the House of Lords' staff.

5.—ESTIMATES.

The Estimates for the House of Lords for 1953–54 were laid before the Committee by the Clerk of the Parliaments and approved.

6.—RETIREMENT OF SENIOR LIBRARY ASSISTANT.

The Committee approved an extension of service until 31st December, 1952, to Leonard Edmund Vergine, M.B.E., Senior Library Assistant.

The Committee also awarded a pension and sanctioned the payment of an additional allowance to him under the Superannuation Acts, 1935 and 1949, on his retirement from 1st January, 1953.

7.—RETIREMENT OF DOORKEEPER.

The Committee awarded a pension and sanctioned the payment of an additional allowance under the Superannuation Act. 1909, to Frederick Cecil Bell, M.M., who retired voluntarily from 1st November, 1952, after 23 completed years' service.

8.—ATTENDANT—DUE FOR RETIREMENT.

The Committee awarded a pension and sanctioned the payment of an additional allowance under the Superannuation Act, 1935, to Stanley Harrison Ketcher, an established Attendant in the Lord Great Chamberlain's Department, who attained 65 years of age on 2nd November, 1952.

The Committee were informed that Mr. Ketcher had been re-employed in an unestablished capacity.

9.—RETIREMENT OF CUSTODIAN INSPECTOR (since deceased).

The Committee sanctioned the payment of a gratuity on retirement under section 39 (2) of the Superannuation Act, 1949, to the legal personal representative of the late James Gallop, an unestablished Inspector of Custodians.
