§ 2.38 p.m.
§ THE LORD CHANCELLOR (VISCOUNT JOWITT)My Lords, I trust you will forgive the irregularity of this intervention, but today happens to be the eighty-second birthday of my noble friend the Leader of the House. I propose to send him a message of affection and good cheer on behalf of the whole House, and I am certain that your Lordships in all parts of the House will authorise me to do so. He is making good progress, and we all look forward to seeing him back here again as soon as may be. We very much hope that when that day comes he will be good and do what his doctors tell him.
§ THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURYMy Lords, on behalf of noble Lords on these Benches I, too, wish the Leader of the House very many happy returns of the day. As the Lord Chancellor has said, we hope to see him back soon, but I hope that he will first get really fit. Whenever he comes Lord Addison will receive a very warm welcome from us all.
§ VISCOUNT SAMUELMy Lords, I desire to be associated with this message to our noble Leader, wishing him many 116 happy returns of the day and a speedy return here.
THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORKMy Lords, on behalf of those who sit on these Benches, I should like to join in wishing the noble Viscount very many happy returns of the day. We hope we shall have his presence amongst us for many years to come.
