HL Deb 14 June 1951 vol 172 c95

4.7 p.m.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, I beg to ask His Majesty's Government a Question of which I have given private notice—namely, whether they have any Statement to make on the progress of the search for H.M. Submarine "Affray."

THE FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (LORD PAKENHAM)

My Lords, I am obliged to the noble Marquess for giving me an opportunity of making a statement. The House will wish to know that a signal has been received from H.M.S. "Reclaim," the diving vessel, and has now been confirmed, that H.M. Submarine "Affray" has been found. From the position given in the signal, she is lying near the edge of the Hurd Deep in about 200 feet of water. This position is about forty miles south-west of "Affray's" diving position. This discovery marks the end of a long and difficult search which has been in progress since April 17.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, I am sure we are all glad to hear this news, because it will enable the Admiralty to discover the cause of this dreadful disaster. I should like at the same time to repeat what I have already said—how deeply we sympathise with the relatives of those who lost their lives.

LORD PAKENHAM

My Lords, I am grateful to the noble Marquess, and on behalf of the Government I would join very sincerely in what he has just said.
