2.35 p.m.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (VISCOUNT JOWITT)

My Lords, I am sure your Lordships will forgive me for any irregularity of which I may be guilty when I tell you immediately what I think your Lordships would like to know— namely, that the operation on the noble Viscount the Leader of the House has been successfully performed, and that his condition is satisfactory.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, your Lordships will all welcome the news that has been given us by the Lord Chancellor. We send the Leader of the House our sincere sympathy and best wishes for a rapid recovery.

VISCOUNT SAMUEL

My Lords, on behalf of those who sit on these Benches, I should like to thank the Lord Chancellor for conveying to the House this news in a matter which has caused us all so much anxiety.
