THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES (THE EARL OF DROGHEDA)

My Lords, I beg to move that the proposed Amendments to Private Bill Standing Orders be approved. These Standing Orders are reviewed almost every year, and although the list of Amendments is a rather formidable one I do not think I need trouble your Lordships with details, since the Amendments are either unimportant or technical. There is only one that calls for mention, and that is the Amendment designed to prevent the Chairman of Committees having to move twenty or more Second Readings on the same day. That may be good exercise for the Chairman and the noble and learned Viscount on the Woolsack, and produces a good deal of diversion for the onlooker, but I do not think it is a practice to be encouraged. I beg to move that these Amendments be approved.
