HL Deb 13 February 1951 vol 170 c274
LORD SHEPHERD

My Lords, I feel sure that this Motion and the Order which it covers will be non-controversial, but it seems to be desirable that in moving it I should mention one or two matters without making a speech. Under the Summer Time Acts originally placed upon the Statute Book the period of summer time in any one year was from April 22 to October 7. In 1947 an amending Act was passed which gave Parliament the right to vary those dates to meet any circumstances that might arise. Last year the dates were varied and the period that had been enforced before that occasion was shortened by three weeks. On this occasion, because of the difficulties of the present time, the Government feel that they should maintain what we agreed to in 1950. Therefore, summer time in 1951 will be from April 15 to October 21: in other words, the period will be three weeks longer than under the original Acts. I beg to move.

Moved, That an Humble Address be presented to His Majesty praying that the Summer Time Order, 1951, reported from the Special Orders Committee on Thursday last, be made in the form of the draft laid before Parliament.—(Lord Shepherd.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
