HL Deb 29 November 1950 vol 169 cc599-600

2.37 p.m.

LORD LYLE OF WEST BOURNE

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether their attention has been called to notices being published by the British Electricity Authority to the effect that the new power station at Stourport is using visible red heat for the production of electricity; whether information can be given as to the present output of this particular station; and whether steps can be taken to prevent the deluding of the public by such announcements until the power stations in question have been fully completed and are giving service to the public.]

LORD SHEPHERD

My Lords, this question is about matters of day-to-day administration which are the concern of the British Electricity Authority, and it would not be in accordance with the intentions of the Electricity Act, 1947, if His Majesty's Government were to assume a responsibility in such matters. This does not mean, however, that His Majesty's Government accept the implications of the question.

Lord LYLE OF WESTBOURNE

My Lords, may I ask whether, from the suggestion of use of visible red heat in this generating station, which apparently does not exist at all, we are to under-stand that it is the policy of the Electricity Authority to fly its house flag inside as well as outside the building?

LORD SHEPHERD

My Lords, as I have already informed your Lordships, the Government cannot accept responsibility; therefore, with much regret, I find myself unable to reply.
