HL Deb 24 May 1950 vol 167 c476

2.45 p.m.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government why they have not closed the Hungarian Club, at 33, Pembridge Square, as a reprisal for the action taken by the Hungarian Government against the British Council.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (LORD HENDERSON)

My Lords, His Majesty's Government have already retaliated for the action taken by the Hungarian Government against the British Council by closing the Hungarian Cultural Institute, and no further reprisals are called for. His Majesty's Government have no grounds for taking any special measures in regard to the Hungarian Club, apart from keeping a close watch on its activities.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I note with pleasure the assurance contained in the latter part of the noble Lord's reply. I hope that observation will be continuous.
