HL Deb 25 April 1950 vol 166 c1105

2.47 p.m.

Order of the Day for the House to be put into Committee read.

Moved, That the House do now resolve itself into Committee.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.

House in Committee accordingly:

[The LORD TERRINGTON in the Chair]

Clause 1 [Extension of principal Acts to persons domiciled in Northern Ireland]:

LORD LLEWELLIN moved, in subsection (1), to substitute "principles and rules" for "rules and principles." The noble Lord said: This is a very small Amendment. I seek to alter the order of the words "rules and principles" in line 9 of page 1, so that they comply with line 22 on the same page. I referred to this matter on Second Reading, and it is the only point of dispute that I can see in the Bill. I beg to move my Amendment.

Amendment moved— Page 1, line 9, leave out ("rules and principles") and insert ("principles and rules").—(Lord Llewellin.)

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (VISCOUNT JOWITT)

I have great pleasure in accepting the Amendment. I feel that I must congratulate myself on the proof which it offers of the scrupulous care which is shown by the noble Lord, Lord Llewellin, over our proceedings. It also makes me realise that, if ever I do get a Bill through without any Amendment, it is proof positive that the Bill is almost perfect. In these circumstances, I have much pleasure in accepting this Amendment. In future I will try to abide by the rules and principles—or is it the principles and rules?—which the noble Lord lays down!

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

Clause 1, as amended, agreed to.

Remaining clauses agreed to.

House resumed.
