Order of the Day read for the consideration of the Fifth Report from the Select Committee.

The Committee reported as follows:

1 —ACCOMMODATION—HOUSE OF LORDS.

The Committee appointed a Sub-Committee to consist of the Lord Great Chamberlain or his deputy, the Leaders of the three parties in the House or deputies appointed by them, the Chairman of Committees and the Lord Badeley, with the Clerk of the Parliaments and the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod to consider matters dealing with the cleaning, renovation and seating in the Lords' Chamber after its vacation by the House of Commons.

2.—MEMORIAL TO THE LATE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY.

A Report from the Sub-Committee appointed to consider matters relating to a memorial to the late Marquess of Salisbury was laid before the Committee and agreed to.

3.—SUPERANNUATION.

The Committee sanctioned the adoption of the provisions of the Superannuation Act, 1949, for the staff of the House of Lords.

4.—CLERICAL ASSISTANCE FOR THE LORDS OF APPEAL.

The Committee agreed to the appointment of additional staff in the Parliament Office for the purpose of assisting the nine Lords of Appeal.

5.— DOORKEEPERS AND HOUSE MESSENGERS.

The Committee approved revised scales of salary for the Doorkeepers and House Messengers

6.—RETIREMENT OF PORTER.

The Committee sanctioned payment of a gratuity under section 39 (2) of the Superannuation Act, 1949, to Thomas John O'Brien, an unestablished porter, on his retirement as from 17th September, 1949.

7.—ESTIM ATES.

The Estimates for the House of Lords for 1950–51 were laid before the Committee by the Clerk of the Parliaments and approved.

8.—JOINT WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE AND HOUSE OF 'LORDS WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE.

The Lord Badeley was appointed a member of the Sub-Committee on the House of Lords War Memorial and of the Joint War Memorial Committee.
